The Applications and Notes of Iron on Heat Transfer Paper

The Applications and Notes of Iron on Heat Transfer Paper

      iron on transfer paper
A heat transfer paper, otherwise known as an iron-on transfer, is a patch or form with a heat

activated adhesive substance on the back that permanently adheres to cloth when heat is applied. A

heat transfer is often used on denim jackets, jeans, T-shirts, caps and other garments. It is

recommended to ensure that the receiving cloth is cotton. Other blends may melt with high heat from

the iron. (Of course if you have a Heat Press Machine, the operations will be easy)

    1. If the patch is cloth with embroidered stitching, set the iron to the hottest setting. If the patch is

vinyl, use a cooler setting. Disable the steam setting and use a dry iron.

    2. Once the iron is heated, press (iron) the area on the receiving item where the transfer is to be

placed.

    3. Position the transfer on the pressed area of the receiving item.

    4. Press and hold the iron lightly on the patch for a few seconds. The heat from the iron will activate

the adhesive substance and permanently attach the transfer to the cloth.

    5. Slightly move the iron back and forth over the transfer for about one minute.

    6. Slightly move the iron back and forth over the transfer for about one minute.

Depending on the heat transfer patch, the edges may loosen after a few washings. If the patch is of

the embroidered variety, stitch the patch onto the garment with a needle and thread.

      Notes:

Stop immediately and remove the iron from the surface if you notice a burning smell. The smell of

burning cloth means either the cloth or the transfer is melting. For puffy, rubbery or plastic transfers,

closely follow the manufacturer's instructions. These transfers are easily damaged during application.
